Thomas Edward Hathaway Jr. was born April 19, 1943, to parents Thomas Edward Hathaway Sr. and Catherine Morris Hathaway. He passed away on Jan. 23, 2024, at the age of 80. He is survived by his loving and caring wife of nearly 23 years, Constance Lim Donohue Hathaway. He is also survived by his niece, Maureen Hathaway Glemser and Patrick Glemser.
He leaves behind his grandnieces and nephews, Patrick Jr. and Megan Glemser, Maura Glemser, and Paul and Kat Glemser, as well as his great-grandniece and nephew, Houston Wade Glemser and Hazel Marie Glemser.
Tom was predeceased by his parents; his first wife, Dolores; brother, Robert and wife, Joan; and brother, Donald.
Tom attended St. John’s Prep School from 1957 to 1960 and graduated on June 23, 1960. Later that year, Tom joined Chase Manhattan Bank, where he was employed from 1960 until his retirement in 1998, attaining the position of second vice president, Tom also worked as an independent contractor for the Prudential Insurance Company from 1998 until 2000.
During his time at Chase, Tom entered military service in San Antonio, Texas, and served in the United States Air Force from 1964 through 1968, rising to the rank of airman first class with the Strategic Air Command in the role of a member of the Air Police. Tom was awarded the Air Force Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon. He was discharged on April 8, 1968, from Homestead AFB in Florida.
Tom had many hobbies and interests during his life, and was especially fond of watching baseball, hockey, golf and football. He had a large collection of baseballs that were signed by many of the most famous ballplayers of the modern age. He was also a fine bowler, holding membership in the American Bowling Congress 700 Series Club, having been certified by the ABC in sanctioned competition, scoring a 728. Tom enjoyed card games, especially “Hearts” and cribbage. He was an avid traveler, having visited Alaska, Canada, Cancun, Italy and most of the islands in the Caribbean. His favorite pastime was playing with and caring for his four dogs, Rusty, Bentley, Mojo and Reggie.
Tom enjoyed his retirement in Hawley, Pa, and became an active leader in the Knights of Columbus. His contributions to the organization were invaluable. He served as financial secretary for Council #7403 in Lake Ariel, Pa. and as financial comptroller for Assembly #927 in Honesdale, Pa. He was district deputy for Pa. District #55 and Pennsylvania state program director. Tom was also instrumental in implementing, planning and managing council programs that made it possible for Council #7403 to attain the National Knights of Columbus Star Council Award in 2023. He was also responsible for the development and management of the Pa. State Football Sweeps Program, which is the largest fundraising program of the year for charitable purposes. Through his leadership, Council #7403 has been ranked number “1” in the State of Pennsylvania for the past three years regarding generating funds with which to help others in need. The funding has made it possible to assist programs such as soup kitchens, food pantries, winter coats for kids in need, Special Olympics, automatic defibrillators in the church and parish center and many more. Whenever something needed to be done, Tom was the first to take up the task and get things rolling.
His dedication to the Knights of Columbus was truly remarkable. Tom was recognized with several awards for his selfless service to the Knights, church and community, including the Bishop Hoban Assembly #927 Knight of the Year for the 2019-2020 Fraternal Year, the Hawley Council Knight of the Year for the 2010-2011 Fraternal Year, and the Lake Ariel Council #7403 Knight of the Year for 2021. Tom’s contributions to the organization were invaluable, and he will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to helping others.
Tom was a long-time member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale, Pa., and spent much time in chapel praying for everyone. He was a leader and inspiration to others who have interest in living a good Christian life. Those who had the privilege of crossing paths with Tom were blessed to have a hardworking, supportive and friendly leader in their lives. No doubt that the first words Tom heard upon entering heaven were “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”
