Robert Joseph O’Neill, 88, of Honesdale, died peacefully at home after a courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, August 11, 2016. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, the former Lucille Beauregard. The couple married on October 16, 1948 in Kittery, Maine.

Born on February 5, 1928 in Honesdale, he was the son of the late William Henry and Mary M. Weidner O’Neill. On December 28, 1945, he joined the US Marine Corp and was part of the Army Occupation in Japan, but later transferred to the Naval Base in Portsmouth, NH. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and WWII Victory Medal.

Bob worked many years as a postal carrier for the US Postal Service in Honesdale and also worked for the former Armored Carrier, American Courier and later Puralator before retiring in 1985. Following his retirement, he worked part time for Edward J. Schwarz Buick as a salesman.

A faithful member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale, Bob was also a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #363 in Honesdale.

Very musically talented, Bob enjoyed singing, playing the piano and saxophone. He also enjoyed traveling, camping, bowling and golf. Most of all, he especially enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren, great grandchildren and the Nick Barna family.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Michael O’Neill and wife Janice of Lititz, PA, Kathleen O’Neill, Daniel O’Neill and wife Dorothy, Paul O’Neill and wife Donna, Tom O’Neill and wife Ann and John O’Neill and wife Suzanne all of Honesdale; 14 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; very close family friends, Nicholas and Linda Barna and family.

He was preceded in death by his sister Kathleen Paynter and her husband Louis.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 16th at St. Mary Magdalen Church, Honesdale at 10am. Interment with military honors will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Friends may visit Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale on Monday, 4 to 7.
