John Joseph Schwarz, 78, of Honesdale, died on Monday, December 4, 2023 at Wayne Memorial Hospital following a long battle with Parkinson’s and dementia. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, the former Joan Christiansen. The couple married on May 6, 1967.

Born in Honesdale on March 13, 1945, he was the youngest of the Edward J. and Glady (Hirt) Schwarz. He graduated from Honesdale Catholic High School, class of 1963. In his younger years, he worked for the Honesdale Boro, plowing snow. As a teenager, he began serving in the Pennsylvania National Guard.

John joined the family business, Edw. J. Schwarz, Inc. car dealership in Honesdale where he continued to work until becoming ill. He dedicated his life to the family business and appreciated the relationships he made with the employees and customers. He especially appreciated being able to work side by side with his family.

Willing to drop anything he was doing, John was always there to help. Whether it be helping an employee, someone who needed a new car or going out on a wrecker call, he was happy to help his friends.

His biggest joys were spending time with his family, dancing with his wife, antiquing, watching his grandchildren at sporting events, making Sunday breakfast, playing Santa Clause, tinkering around the house and driving his tractors.

In addition to his wife, John is survived by his son Christian Schwarz of Honesdale; his daughter, Jaclyn Rogers and companion, Bob Carmody of Honesdale; his sister, Glady Welsh of Honesdale; his grandchildren, Kane and Chloe Rogers; many extended family.

He was preceded in death by his brother, William Schwarz; his sister, Virginia Cook; son-in-law, William Rogers.

The family would like to thank David Romas, whom John was extremely lucky to have as a caregiver. They would also like to thank the whole Wayne Memorial Hospital and Hospice staff for their professional and heartfelt care.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Dec. 16th at St. Mary Magdalen Church, Honesdale at 10 am. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Arrangements by Hessling Murray Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale.

In lieu of flowers, give to your family or friends in John’s memory.
