John Anthony Galizia, 74, of Hawley, died on Thursday, March 9, 2023 at Geisinger Community Medical Center. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, the former Lois Giani.

Born on July 21, 1948 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late John and Mary “Dolly” Galizia. He was a US Marine Corp. veteran who served during the Vietnam War.

John was a retired New York City Transit Police Officer and an EMT with Lackawaxen Ambulance. He was a faithful member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale.  For over 20 years, John was a member of the prison society acting as a liaison between prisoners and the authorities helping many over the years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son Thomas Galizia and wife Stephanie of CA and their children, Trevor and Juliette; his sisters, Joanne and Theresa Galizia both of New Jersey; his brother-in-law Thomas Van Hoesen numerous nieces and nephew.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Maryann Van Hoesen.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 20th at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Honesdale at 10 am. Interment will follow in St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may visit Hessling Murray Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale on Sunday, March 19th, 2 to 5.
