Helen I. Mundy, 90, of Honesdale, died on Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at home. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Robert J. Mundy, on November 18, 2010. They were married January 15, 1955, and resided in Cherry Ridge.
Born at home in Steene, PA, on June 15, 1925, she was the daughter and last surviving member of the late John and Julia (Kresock) Gallick family. Her first seven years of education was in a one room school house in Steene; she graduated from Honesdale Catholic High School in 1942. She went on to receive an R.N. degree from St. Michael’s Hospital in Newark, NJ. Afterwards, she enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps, and attended training at Ft. Sam Houston in Texas. Serving as a Lieutenant, she was stationed at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. for two years. While there, she took care of many soldiers that had been badly wounded in the Korean War Conflict. When she returned to Honesdale, she continued to use her compassion and skills and worked as a private duty nurse.
Helen was a devoted member of St. John’s Parish in Honesdale. She was a past president of the Altar and Rosary Society. She was one of the original members of Perpetual Adoration, and was active until most recently with the Quilters and the Parish Flea Market. She also belonged to the Hospital Auxiliary and volunteered her time, working at the Other Shop.
Her love of church, country, community, friends and especially her family were demonstrated in the way she lived her entire life. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother and great-grandmother. Her love for her family was shown in the many ways she cared, and she will truly be missed.
Survivors include her son, Jack, Honesdale, daughter Susan Gavin and husband Michael, Wantagh, NY, daughter Maria and fiancé Dr. Mark Stega, Annapolis, MD; grandchildren Casey Capece and husband Matthew, Jenna, Robert, and Maureen Gavin, and Tanner and Jake Mundy; and great grandchildren Gavin and Caleigh. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her brothers Joseph, John and William Gallick, and her sisters, Catherine McGinnis, Elizabeth Highhouse, Mary Woods, and Margaret McCormick.
A special thank you is given to the wonderful aides and hospice nurses for their kindness, dedication, and compassion in the last months of her life.
