Helen A. Stegner, RN, 100, of Honesdale, died on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at Ellen Memorial in Honesdale.

Born on February 26, 1924 in Honesdale, Helen is the last surviving member of the John B. and Christine T. (Kuhn) Stegner family. She was a graduate of Honesdale Catholic High School, class of 1941. In 1945, she received her degree in nursing from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. Helen worked as a private duty nurse and was a staff nurse at Wayne Memorial Hospital until retiring in 1990.

Helen was a faithful member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale and its Altar and Rosary Society. Before becoming ill, Helen always tried to attend Mass daily. She was also a member of the Mercy Hospital Alumni Association, the Wayne Pike Private Duty Nurses Association and the Pennsylvania Nurses Association.

She is survived by her niece, Christine Hannagan and husband Dr. Robert Hannagan of Boulder, CO; great nieces, Lindsay Berning and husband David of Parker, CO and Gillian Rimicci and husband Fabrizio of Boulder, CO; great great nieces, Elizabeth and Amelia Berning and Gabriella and Juliette Rimicci. She is also survived by many extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Ruth Carragher and Esther Gay; her brother, John H. Stegner; a nephew, Michael Carragher and a niece, Patricia Groves.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Monday, May 6th at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Honesdale at 10 am. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Honesdale. Arrangements by Hessling Murray Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale.
