George J. Herzog, 95, of Honesdale, died October 22, 2022 with his wife Ginny by his side. He and his wife, formerly Virginia Martin, celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary on August 1st.
Born May 1, 1927 in Honesdale to the late George and Ludwina Balz Herzog, George attended Honesdale Catholic School before joining the US Navy in May 1944. He later graduated from Waymart High School in 1948.
While serving in the Navy during WWII, George served aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Randolph CV15, serving in the Pacific Theatre. He was discharged in 1946 with various medals, including the WWII medal, American Campaign medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign, Occupation service, and Wayne County Service medal.
George took great pride in his hometown of Honesdale and enjoyed serving his community as a barber for more than 40 years, a patrolman for the Honesdale Borough Police Department, a Texas Township Constable, and security for numerous organizations including the Wayne County Fair. He was a life member of Hose CO #1 Fire Department and a past member of the VFW.
George was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with his family in the great outdoors, especially taking his family camping along the Delaware, fishing with his children and grandchildren, and hunting with his sons Jeff and David and grandsons at David’s farm in South Canaan.
George was always one for a joke, good or not so good. He loved going for Sunday drives and, with so many children, threatening to leave them sit on the guardrail until he returned. His stories and jokes were some of the most loved things about him and will be fondly remembered by his family and friends.
George is survived by his wife, Ginny, and by children JoAnn and husband Christopher of Colorado, Jeffrey and wife Donna of Honesdale, MaryAnn and wife Lynn of Colorado, LuAnn and husband Carle of Florida, Diane of Texas, David and wife Paula of South Canaan, Jane and husband Mark of Florida, Danielle and husband John of Honesdale, Laurie and husband Jason of the US Air Force, Virginia. George also leaves behind a legacy of many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews, including Danny Martin of Kentucky, and life-long friend Carolyn Grady of Tyler Hill. He was preceded in death by brother Eugene and sister Elizabeth.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 25th at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Honesdale at 10 am. Interment with military honors will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Friends may visit Hessling Murray Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale on Monday, 4 to 7.
Memorial contributions can be made to Hose CO #1 at PO Box 174 Honesdale, PA 18431.
