Gary Robert Stinnard, 71, of Elkin, NC and formerly of Honesdale, died unexpectedly, on Saturday, December 23, 2023 at his home in North Carolina.

Born on June 22, 1952 in Honesdale, he was the son of the late Robert L. and Lois Adair (Branning) Stinnard. He was a graduate of Honesdale High School, class of 1970 and was a member of the first school football team. During his senior year, at the age of 17, Gary enlisted in the US Navy and began a long career serving his country. He began his training in San Diego, CA and soon after volunteered for submarine service. He called the submarine, USS Patrick Henry his home. On December 7, 1971, he was sent to Vietnam and served there until December of 1972. A decorated veteran, Gary earned two Purple Hearts while serving in the US Navy. On February 14, 1980, he was honorably discharged and served in the reserves until January 1, 1994.

Over his career, Gary had several places of employment. He began working at Measurex Inc. Computer Tech in maintenance and repairs. Later, he became an engineer working for different radio and TV stations in the area. He then began working at SCI Waymart where he was a Training Sergeant. He retired from SCI Waymart in 2010.

A proud veteran, Gary was a member of the VFW in Honesdale and several other veteran organizations. In his spare time, Gary enjoyed target shooting and spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed traveling. He especially enjoyed visiting National Park Battlefields and their museums.

Surviving is his daughters, Shannon Shylkofski and husband Frank of Honesdale and Erin of NC; his step-son, Scott Kramer of Aurora, CO; his sisters, JoAnn Warcholak and husband Paul of South Canaan and Dottie O’Niell and husband Dan of Honesdale; his dear friend, Jack Beesmer; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 5th, at Hessling Murray Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale at 10 am. Interment with military honors will follow in Indian Orchard Cemetery, Honesdale. Friends may visit on Thursday, 4 to 7 at the funeral home.
