Ernestine Landers passed away on September 14, 2016, at home following an illness with her husband of 52 years, James A. Landers at her side.

 

Ernestine was born on August 15, 1940 on a rural farm in South Carolina to loving parents Moses and Lila Love. One of 10 children she was a middle child, nick named Tina by her siblings. She graduated from Florence High School in the class of 1960. She moved to and worked in the city of Columbia South Carolina where she later married James A. Landers and moved to Honesdale Pennsylvania in 1964 and resided in Honesdale for the rest of her days as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

 

As a civic minded citizen she received in July 2016 a recognition certificate of induction into the Pennsylvania  voter hall of fame for service of 50 years continuous voting in all elections. She was a member and helped form the young democrats group in the late 1960’s in Wayne County. She was active in the belief of independent women’s rights and equality. She set an example for her daughters and granddaughters that women were just as important as men in any society and should be respected.

 

She enjoyed square dancing, flower gardening, making and painting ceramics, baking one of the best apple pies, babysitting, drawing with her children and grandchildren. She was always there as much as she could be for her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews to make them feel loved.

 

She was preceded in death by her son James R. Landers, her daughter Barbara Nelson, her son-in-law Christopher Quales, as well as by her parents, 2 brothers Jackie Moses Love, Lewis Love, and 3 sisters Avala Large, Bessie Kline and Mildred Love.

 

She is survived by her husband of 52 years James A. Landers, their remaining daughter Judy Quales-Tiner, a son-in-law Roger Tiner, her grandchildren Jesse Quales, Sarah Quales, Jonathan Tiner, Christopher Nelson, Andrea Nelson,  Kyle Nelson and 2 great grandchildren Zander Nelson and Andrew Nelson. As well as by 4 brothers Alton Love,  Merrill Love, Rudolph Love and Charles Love, as well as many nieces and nephews which she loved all dearly.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, September 19th at 10am at St. John the Evangelist Church, Honesdale.  Interment will follow in St. John’s Cemetery.  Friends may visit Hessling Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale on Sunday, 2 to 4.
