Dorothy H. Gunuskey, 96, of Honesdale, died on Friday, March 3, 2017 at Wayne Memorial Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hobert T. Gunuskey, Sr. on August 3, 1996. The couple married on August 5, 1945.

Born on December 29, 1920 in White Mills, the only child of William K. and Ethel Box Hittinger, in the house built by Christian Dorflinger for her great grandparents, John and Mary Box when he came to work in the Dorflinger glass factory about 1867.

A member of Grace Church for over seventy years, she served as church treasurer, was a member of ECW and St. Catherine’s Guild serving for many years as treasurer. She also taught Sunday school and for over twenty years served as lector and chalicest.

During her “stay at home” years, Dorothy was a dedicated member and president of the Stourbridge Elementary P.T.A., also serving on the county N.E. district boards. She was awarded lifetime memberships to both the Pennsylvania and National organizations for her long term commitment to the P.T.A.

Dorothy retired in 1984 after working 18 years in the office of Charles S. Siepiela, Honesdale. Earlier employment included the main office of Corning Glass, Corning, NY; Farmers & Merchants Bank, Honesdale; and part-time with Katz Bros. Department Store and the W.T. Grant Co.

An avid volunteer, she was a Red Cross Grey Lady for 27 years; usher at Dorflinger Glass Museum & Wildlife concerts for 25+ years; over 50 years as member and twice president of the Woman’s Club of Honesdale. She was an original member of the Club’s Antique Show committee in the 1960’s. Her bus trips to the Philadelphia Flower Show for the Women’s Club were also a pleasure for all who supported this project. Also a member of the Wayne Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and a 30 year volunteer at the Other Shop, and a member of the Friends of the Library.

Her hobbies included travel, having traveled extensively in the United States and Europe, Asia, Africa, as well as Australia and New Zealand; her flowers which brought approving comments from passerby; reading; crafts and later her computer. Her pleasant personality will be missed by those who knew her.

She is survived by two sons, Thomas W. of Plantation, FL and Hobert T. Jr. (Terry) of Philadelphia, who were the joy of her life.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 18th at Grace Episcopal Church, Honesdale at 11am. Interment will follow in Indian Orchard Cemetery, Honesdale. Arrangements by Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale.

In lieu of flowers, friends are encouraged to contribute to the Wayne County Library or the Dessin Animal Shelter or a charity of their choice.
