Marie Hopkins Diehl, 88, of Honesdale and formerly of Damascus, passed away suddenly on September 2, 2018. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Fred Diehl Sr. on October 7, 2015. Born on July 22, 1930 in Rileyville, she was the oldest child of the late Lynn and Edna Gillette Hopkins. She graduated from Damascus High School, class of 1947 and Wayne Commercial School in 1948. On August 26, 1948, she and Bob were married in Rileyville and moved to the farm in Damascus. She was a homemaker, truck driver, school bus driver and babysitter. Marie was a talented seamstress and quilter which she continued to enjoy until her passing. Marie loved being involved in her grandchildren’s and great grandchildren’s lives. She loved attending their sporting and school events to support them. Surviving are her children Susan Mohn and husband Rodney of Beach Lake, Connie Turner and husband Danny of Damascus, Sharon Hahn and husband Paul of Callicoon Center, NY, Holly Kehoe and husband James of Roseboom, NY and Michael Diehl of Harrisburg; her daughter-in-law Theresa (Cottell) Diehl of Honesdale; her siblings Harold Hopkins and wife Betty of Tyler Hill, Paul Hopkins and wife Jeri of Lookout and Sandra Hartzell and husband Frank of Montoursville, PA; and her sister-in-law Juanita Diehl of Damascus. She was the proud grandmother of 23 grandchildren and 37 great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son Robert F. Diehl Jr. on March 31, 2017 and her great grandson Aiden Melvin Irwin. Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 7th at Hessling Funeral Home, Inc. at 11 am by her brother-in-law Rev. Frank Hartzell. Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery in Damascus. Friends may visit on Thursday, 4-7. Marie requested that donations be made to the Wayne County Community Foundation Scholarship Fund in memory of her son Robert F. Diehl Jr., 214 Ninth Street, Honesdale, PA 18431. |
