George Jerome Southerton, 95, a lifelong resident of Honesdale, died unexpectedly on Sunday, September 14, 2014 at his home. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Evelyn Larsen on January 12, 1972. He was born in Honesdale on November 17, 1918, the son of the late George and Kathryn Myers Southerton. George was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army Air Corps in Europe. He was among the troops landing at Normandy on D-Day. He worked for Kinsman’s Garage as a mechanic from 1945 until he retired in 1983. George was an avid and active hunter and fisherman until his death and a member of Ten Mile Hollow Sportsmen Club. He is survived by his brother Bernard G. Southerton and his wife Florence of Honesdale; his children Diana Lee and husband John Kleinschmidt of Pennsburg, PA, Donald G. Southerton and wife Anna of Golden, CO and Daniel K. Southerton of Honesdale; his grandchildren Robert L. Rudloff and wife Lora, James Southerton, Timothy Southerton, Kathryn and Byron Southerton; a brother-in-law Keith Larsen and wife Lorraine of Hastings, NE; 4 step-grandchildren and 7 step-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers William and Robert Southerton and two sisters Ruth Jeko and Marie Smith. A Funeral Blessing will be held at Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale on Thursday, Sept. 18th at 10 am. Interment will military honors will follow in Glen Dyberry Cemetery, Honesdale. Friends may visit on Wednesday from 6 to 8 and on Thursday, 9 to service time.
