Vernon A. DeGroat, 80, of Honesdale, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at home with his wife by his side. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, the former Carol A. Spangenberg. Born on September 9, 1937 at the family homestead in Indian Orchard, he was son the late Arthur and Helen Spry DeGroat. He served in the US Army for four years during peacetime. He was employed at Aldenville Wood Products for 45 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and stocking trout. Vernon took pride in teaching his son hunting and fishing skills and finishing second in the annual big buck contest at the Wayne Independent. He also enjoyed tractor pulling and demos. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his brother Byron DeGroat and a sister Lorraine Carney; his daughter Renee DeGroat of Honesdale; his son Arthur DeGroat of Beach Lake. He had seven children with his first wife, Sharon Delaney, Vernon Jr., Tammy Peters, Jesse Perry, Carlton Perry, Kandy Clark and Mark Santoli; several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
