Robert Fred Diehl, Sr., 89, of Honesdale and formerly of Damascus, died peacefully on October 7, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, the former Marie Edna Hopkins. The couple married on August 26, 1948. He was born on September 15, 1926 in Damascus and was the son of the late Frederic Henry And Ruth Margaret Sutliff Diehl. He was a graduate of Damascus High School where he fell in love with his future wife Marie, basketball and baseball. He continued playing basketball and baseball on local town teams. Bob was inducted into the first class of the Wayne County Sports Hall of Fame. He supported the local high school teams and taught his children and grandchildren to play ball up until his death. He was a farmer and truck driver and in 1945, he started a milk can pick up business, delivering milk from local farms to the processing plants. He and his father started a logging business and delivered props to the coal mines in the Scranton area. On his return trips, he delivered coal to local homes for heat. Years later, he and his son Bob started a logging business together. When milk cans were replaced by bulk tanks, he switched to tank trucks. In 1978 he sold the milk pick-up business to what is now Diehl Trucking. Bob also drove bus for Bill Coe, providing transportation for Damascus School students. For many years, Bob served as Damascus Township Supervisor. Also surviving are his children, Susan Mohn and husband Rodney of Beach Lake, Connie Turner and husband Daniel of Damascus, Sharon Hahn and husband Paul of Callicoon Center, NY, Robert Fred Diehl, Jr. and wife Theresa (Cottell) of Honesdale, Holly Kehoe and husband James of Roseboom, NY and Michael Diehl of Harrisburg; his sister-in-law Juanita Diehl; 23 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Donald J. Diehl and his great grandson Aiden Melvin Irwin. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Oct. 12th at Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale at 10 am. Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Damascus. Friends may visit Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale on Sunday, 2 to 5.
