William Gerard “Jerry” Tuman, 86, of Honesdale, died on Saturday, June 4, 2016 at Hospice of the Sacred Heart Inpatient Unit in Dunmore. He is survived by his wife, of 59 years, the former Jean Marie Ford. The couple married on June 1, 1957.

Born on September 1, 1929 at the family home in Honesdale, PA, he was the son of the late John W. and Florence Coyne Tuman. He was a graduate of Honesdale High School, class of 1948 and later attended Penn State University. Jerry was US Army disabled combat veteran. He was member of the 2nd Infantry Division serving during the Korean War on the frontline from 1950 to 1951.

He was a partner in the former Honesdale Milling Co. and later was proprietor of Honesdale Canvas Company. Community minded, Jerry served as a Honesdale Borough Council member for 12 years and volunteered for Meals on Wheels. He also was a harness horse racing trainer at the Wayne County Fairgrounds.

Jerry was a life member of Texas #4 Fire Co. in Honesdale and life member of the East Side Hose Co. in Archbald. He served as President of Eastern Federation of Feed Merchants and a life member of the Lake and Brook Club Association.

He coached Honesdale Little League and was instrumental in establishing the Grove Street Little League Complex. He was also a Honesdale Biddy Basketball coach. Jerry enjoyed following local sports and became a fixture at Honesdale boys and girls basketball games for 40 years. An avid golfer, he was a member of the hole-in-one club, playing 96 times in 2015 and was a member of Cricket Hill Golf Club.

He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale and a member of the Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel for 23 years.

In addition to his wife, Jerry is survived by his sons Bill and wife Coleen of Honesdale, Jim and wife Ceil of Croton of the Hudson, NY, Dan and wife Stacey of Purcellville, VA, Michael and wife Ellen of Lake Ariel, PA; daughters Patricia and husband Neil of Collingswood, NJ, Judy and husband Randy of Fawn Grove, PA and Anne and husband David of Wallingford, PA; 21 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Susan Marie Tuman and siblings Florence Schweighofer, John Tuman and Robert Tuman.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 8th at St. John the Evangelist Church, Honesdale at 10am. Interment will follow in St. John’s Cemetery. Friends may visit Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale on Tuesday, 4 to 7.
