William Edward Murray, beloved husband, father, and friend to many, passed away on May13th, 2024 in his hometown of Honesdale. Born Oct 31st, 1937 to Margaret Ham and Edward Murray, William or “Bill” how most people referred to him brought joy and laughter to all who knew him.

A true Honesdale native and humble servant to the community, Bill’s warm heart and quick wit endeared him to everyone he met. His infectious sense of humor could brighten even the darkest of days. Bill had a way of making people feel at ease, included, and welcome. He leaves behind his wife Erin Lonergan of 62 years, Daughter Colleen Murray, Sons Brian and wife Kimberly Murray, and Michael (deceased) and wife Teresa (Tessie) Murray, Grandchildren: Catherine Murray and husband Jack Mayers, Jackie DeSau, Jessica and husband Dan Corrigan, Matthew DeSau and Jesse Hummel. Great grandchildren: Violet Whitmore, Nesta Sevik, Shaela, Isla, Liam, and Maeve Corrigan. Bill’s siblings: Robert Murray and wife Mary Sheehan, Mary Murray and husband Jim Barton (both deceased), Joseph Murray and wife Patricia Connolly (deceased), Rita Murray (deceased) and husband Ralph Langendoerfer, Jane Murray and husband Louis LaBar, Dr. Edward L. Murray and wife Rebecca Rosenkrans; in-laws Brian and Santina (deceased) Palmieri Lonergan, Donato D and Kathryn Lonergan Mecca (both deceased), Robert and Ellen Walker Lonergan (both deceased), Marguerite (deceased) Lonergan and husband Jeffrey Steinberg, and Philip Lonergan (deceased). Also, many other cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Bill attended Honesdale Catholic high school and held class president. Bill then served as Lieutenant in the National Guard 28th Infantry Division and worked at his family’s business Murray Co. His ambition led to an opportunity to work as an International Sales Manager for Katz Inc. that allowed him to travel with his family to Rochester NY and Avon CT before returning to his roots in Honesdale where he worked into his retiring years at the Wayne Bank as a mortgage originator.

During his working years, Bill engaged deeply with the local community. Bill was a member of the Lions Club and served as president for 1 year. Bill coordinated blood drives, assisted in opening Honesdale’s Visitors Center and volunteered his time in any way that he could.

Bill was a devout Catholic and was heavily active in the religious community, lecturing at St. John’s Evangelist Church for 15 years and participated weekly in its Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel.

After retiring, Bill continued to service his community and worked for the state representative Mike Peifer and assisted many in campaigning for local government.

Bill was a social activist. He was loving, caring, kind, and empathetic man who touched the hearts of all whom he met. His faith, family, and friends led him to carry out an extremely blessed and fulfilled life. His uplifting personality positively impacted the community, influencing a sense of warmth and comfort that will sorely be missed by all that loved him.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday May 17th, 2024 at St. John’s Evangelist Church 150 Terrace Street Honesdale PA, 18431. The Mass will be celebrated by Rev. William J. Langan, pastor at 10am. Family and Friends may pay their respects before Mass at 9am. Interment will follow at St. John’s cemetery.  Arrangements by Hessling Murray Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale.
