Virginia E. “Ginny” McCallum died in Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore, PA on April 7, 2018 after a lengthy illness, surrounded by her loving family. She was 74.

Ginny was born on May 16, 1943 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Timothy J. and Marie Haynes Spellman. She attended James Madison High School and went to Brooklyn College. In her early career, she worked tirelessly as a Guardian Ad Litem, advocating for the rights of abused and neglected children. Later, she worked as a teacher for special needs children, and retired from Palm Beach County School District. She married Daniel McCallum in 1989, and they became very active in the Post 4360 VFW in Palm Springs, with Ginny serving as Activities Director for two years. They purchased a motor home and traveled all over the country for several years, during which she parlayed her love of writing into documenting their journeys and adventures into a newsletter appropriately titled “Wanderings”, which she sent to friends and family. Her pride in her children, her fierce loyalty to those closest to her, and her love of reading and writing motivated her despite many serious illnesses, including two recent bouts with cancer.

Ginny is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Sean and Lisa Egan of Portland, OR, Kevin Egan of Honesdale, PA; her step-son Jack Egan and her step-daughter Debbie Stone, both of Sebastian, FL; her sisters Barbara Fischer and Pamela O’Connor; her grandchildren Terrill, Gina, Kayla, Mandy, Jack, Kyle and Brandon, and her twelve great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Daniel McCallum, and her oldest sister, Marilyn Ludovico.

A viewing will take place at Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale on Thursday, April 12th from 4 to 7. A Blessing Service will be held at 7. All are welcome to celebrate Ginny’s life.

As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
