Veramae Monington Belknap

Our hearts are heavy as we announce the peaceful passing of Veramae (Monington) Belknap on January 20, 2025, at Good Samaritan Hospice House in Wexford, Pennsylvania. Just five years after the passing of her beloved husband of 72 years, Bernie, she has now rejoined him in eternity.

Born on January 7, 1930, in Damascus, Pennsylvania, Veramae was one of eight children to the late Leary and Myrtle (Hull) Monington. She grew up in Damascus, attending local schools, and graduated from Damascus High School in 1947.

October 11, 1947 marked a beautiful new chapter in Veramae’s life when she married her soulmate, Bernard Belknap.Theirs was a partnership built on unwavering devotion, a testament to a love that stood the test of time. Together, they created a loving family, including their daughter, Patricia (Kent) Norman, who resides in Sewickley, Pennsylvania. Veramae’s joy multiplied with the arrival of her granddaughter, Jessica (Lindsay Church) Norman, and her great-grandchild, Harlowe Church-Norman, now living in Chicago, Illinois.

Veramae dedicated 41 years to the Katz Underwear Factory, spending the last 32 as a respected floor lady. In her lifelong home of Honesdale, she was a faithful parishioner and a familiar and friendly face, always supporting local businesses and known as a kind and helpful neighbor.

In 2023, she moved to Sewickley to live with her daughter and son-in-law, where she was surrounded by their loving care. After celebrating her 95th birthday, her health began to decline, leading her to the compassionate care of Good Samaritan Hospice House on January 18. Her peaceful passing came three days later.

Veramae was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved Bernie, her sisters: Eloise Bortree, Ellen Williams, and Esther Schomp; as well as her brothers: Willis, Vernon, and Duane. She leaves behind a legacy of love and is survived by her brother, James of Virginia, along with many nieces and nephews, and cherished friends and neighbors.

The caring teams at Simons Funeral Home in Pittsburg and Hessling Murray Funeral Home in Honesdale thoughtfully coordinated Veramae’s funeral arrangements.

Veramae was devout Catholic, a funeral mass celebrating her life will be held on Friday, May 16, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Honesdale, followed by the rite of committal at St. Mary Magdalen cemetery.

Following the services, all are welcome to join the family for a luncheon at TickTocks on Terrace, where we can share stories and celebrate the indelible mark Veramae left on our hearts. Her warmth, her kindness, and her enduring love will be deeply missed.
