Atkinson Share your Memorial with Family & Friends The family of Thomas Ralph Atkinson, 88, of Honesdale, Pa is deeply saddened by the sudden death of their beloved husband, father, and grandfather on January 21st, 2024 after a motor vehicle accident. Tom was a life-long resident of Honesdale with a genuine love for his family, friends, and the outdoors. He was affectionately called “Tommy,” “dad;” “pop,” “bop,” and “Uncle Tommy.” He was inquisitive, intelligent, and well-read with a quick wit and infectious smile. Wherever he went, he found friends and always enjoyed the camaraderie; he was indeed one of a kind. He was instrumental in establishing the Tri-State Gung-Ho Detachment #909 where he served a term as commandant. Tom dedicated his time to volunteerism for the league helping to organize Toys for Tots drives and other fundraising efforts. Tom was an honorary member of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Association, contributed many articles and opinion pieces to the local newspapers as well as the History Channel Magazine and other notable publications. Tom worked as a corrections officer for Farview State Hospital in Waymart, Pa. for nearly 30 years. During that time period he also served a term as the Tri-county counsel president of AFSCME Counsel 13 out of Harrisburg, Pa. Tom is predeceased by his parents John Ralph Atkinson and Helen Tarkett Atkinson, son Thomas Robert “Tommy,” and sister Carol Irwin. He is survived by his beloved wife Margaret “Maggie” Heath Atkinson, daughter Amy, grandchildren James (wife Taren) and Allyson Atkinson, their mother Patricia (née Miller); great grandchildren Natalie and Maggie, brother Gerald and his wife Susan, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Tom also held a special place in his heart for Lianna De Pinto and her parents Leo and Rose Marie. Friends may visit Hessling Murray Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale on Thursday, 2 to 5. A blessing service will be held at 5 o’clock. Interment with military honors will be in Glen Dyberry Cemetery in Honesdale in the spring.
