Sophie H. Savastano Desimone

Sophie Helen Desimone Savastano, aged 90, died Saturday at Wayne Woodlands Manor after a long illness. Beloved mother of Frank (Laura) Savastano of Honesdale; Joseph (Nancie) Savastano, Andover MA; Mark Savastano, Allendale, NJ; and daughter-in-law, Tonia Savastano, Livingston, NJ. Sophie was predeceased in death by her husband, Frank Savastano and eldest son, Louis Savastano. Sophie is survived also by 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Also, her brother Gerald Desimone (Pat) of NJ, sister Rosemarie (Steve) Megna of NJ and brother Carmine Desimone, NJ, sister-in-law Kathy Savastano also of NJ. Numerous nieces and nephews.

Sophie was born one of 8 children, September 8th, 1924 in Newark NJ, to parents Salvatore and Marie Desimone. She attended school in Newark, married her husband Frank moving to Belleville where they raised their 4 sons. Sophie worked as a factory worker and lunch lady while raising her boys. She was always happy to entertain family and friends with good food and laughter.

Sophie and husband, Frank built a house and moved to Springhill, Florida in 1984 where Frank passed away in 1996. Sophie stayed until failing health forced her to move north to be nearer to family. Sophie moved to Honesdale and settled with son Frank and daughter in law, Laura.

Sophie loved bingo and spent many happy hours at the seniors center. She crocheted hundreds of hats that she donated to several charities. She attended St. John the Evangelist church in Honesdale.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be given to Wayne Woodlands Manor or Hospice of the Sacred Heart. The family also wishes to thank Wayne Woodlands Manor staff for their kind and professional care and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their kindness.

Cremation and funeral services by Hessling Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Honesdale and there will be a family memorial gathering in NJ to celebrate Sophie’s life.
