Shirley E. (Staesser) Swendsen, 82, of Lakewood, died on Monday, January 21, 2019 at Wayne Woodlands Manor in Waymart. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Keith Swendsen on April 9, 2004. The couple married on April 8, 1956.

Born on December 16, 1936 in Callicoon, NY, she was the daughter and last surviving member of the Willliam and Emma (Knobel) Staesser family. She was a graduate of Delaware Valley High School in Callicoon.

A housewife and mother, Shirley also worked on the family farm with her husband. She loved the outdoors and working in her garden. Shirley also enjoyed baking bread, pies and canning. Shirley loved to crochet and took great pride in crocheting afghans for her family.

Surviving is her son Vincent Swendsen of Whispering Pines, NC; daughters Virginia Basmayor and husband Richard of Honesdale and Victoria Wargo and husband Robert of Lakewood; her sister-in-law Doris T. Swendsen of Damascus; her grandchildren Eli and wife Jamie, Sarah and husband Ronald, Daniel and wife Dezirae, Jeremy, Emma, Richard and Athena. Also surviving are her great grandchildren Keith, Carly, Ziva, Zacharias, Leslie, Mollie, Julian, Brooklynne and Isiah.

She was preceded in death by her sister Lillian Neer and brothers William and John Staesser.

Funeral services will be held at Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale on Saturday, January 26th at noon. Friends may visit on Saturday, 10 until the time of service. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Northern Wayne Fire Co., 370 Crosstown Hwy., Lakewood, PA 18439.
