Richard Fischer, 83, of Equinunk and formerly of Brooklyn, NY, died on Wednesday, May 27, 2026 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. He is survived by his wife, the former JoAnna T. Scheuren. The couple married on July 3, 2005.

Born on November 25, 1942, he was the son of the late Frederick and Dorothy (Kelly) Fischer. He graduated from James Madison High School in Brooklyn and later served in the US Navy. After receiving an honorable discharge, Richie began a successful career of 20 years with the New York Police Department, rising to the rank of sergeant. Following his retirement, he owned and operated a locksmith business in Staten Island, called Prince’s Bay Locksmith. After 18 years, he retired from that business and settled in Equinunk.

Beyond his professional achievements, Richie was a talented musician, mastering the acoustic guitar, mandolin, fiddle, banjo, and bass. As a member of the Schoolhouse Band along with his wife, they brought joy to many through his music, performing at numerous gigs throughout northern Wayne County and Sullivan County, NY. Richard found great pleasure in gathering with friends to practice at the old Priceville Schoolhouse, where his love for music blossomed.

An outdoor enthusiast, Richard cherished moments spent gardening, fly fishing, and exploring the beauty of nature through kayaking and canoeing. His adventurous spirit and passion for the great outdoors inspired those around him.

Also surviving is his daughter, Elizabeth Farina and husband, Dominick of Milanville; his grandsons, Dominick and Anthony Farina; his sisters, Jeanne Hahn, Christine Fischer, Nancy DeFrietas and Suzanne Martinez; his brothers, John and Edward Fischer; sisters-in-law, Helen Wolfe, Zane Calabrese, Stacie Snow, Veronica Cotton and Christianna DiGori; his brother-in-law, Vincent Scheuren. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and his cats who he loved to care for. Richie was also excited to welcome his first great grandson at the end of June.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Frederick “Mickey” Fischer.

A Blessing Service will be held on Monday, June 1st at Hessling Murray Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale at 3 pm. Friends may visit on Monday, 1 until the time of service. As per his request, cremation will follow.

Memorial contributions can be made in Richie’s name to C Alley Cats of Lake Wallenpaupack, 203 Sunset Hill Rd., Hawley, PA 18428.
