Richard Anthony Doherty, 70 of Honesdale, died Saturday, July 7, 2018 peacefully at home surrounded by family.
Born May 28, 1948 in Honesdale, he was the son of the late Charles W. & Ona M. Watson Doherty. He was a 1968 graduate of Honesdale High School.
He was a member of St. John’s, St. Mary’s Magdalen Church, Honesdale.
After high school he enlisted in the Marine Corp and was assigned to the 3rd Marine Division in Vietnam. He was a Vietnam Veteran and served from 1968-1971. Upon his return he received his associate’s degree in Business from Lackawanna College.
He enjoyed spending time with his loving wife Marie (Bunnell) Doherty, his children and traveling to his grandchildren’s sporting events and just spending time with his family.
He coached little league baseball & softball for many years and was always building or fixing things around the house. He was always busy doing something. He had a great work ethic which he instilled in his children.
Rich worked at Chroma Tube, Moore Business Forms and was still employed as a Dam Tender for the United States Army Corp of Engineers, Prompton Dam.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Marie (Bunnell) Doherty of Honesdale, sons Jason Doherty and wife Patricia & Matthew Doherty and wife Valerie all of Honesdale, and a daughter Amy Wiggans and husband Travis of Tunkhannock.
Surviving brothers Gerald Doherty and wife Eileen of Hawley and Charles Doherty and wife Emilia of Aurora, CO; sisters Madeline Vaverchak & husband Thomas of Syracuse, NY, Winifred Vaverchak of Cicero, NY, Ona Rechner of Jackson, NJ and Karen Batten and husband Thomas of Honesdale.
Grandchildren Katelyn & Jacob Hawley, Holt, Kylee & Caleb Wiggans, Zachary & Megan Doherty, T.J & Kimmy McKinney and Madison and Vidia Doherty.
He was preceded in death by his mother-in-law Shirley Bunnell and brother-in-law Joseph Bunnell. Brothers John, Joseph, James, Paul, William, Michael, and infant brother Patrick; sisters Grace Vansickle & Marilyn Dikeman & infant sisters Maureen, Agnes & twins Joan & Jean.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, July 13th at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Honesdale at 10 am. As per his request, cremation will follow. Friends may visit Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale on Thursday, 4 to 6.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wayne Memorial Home Health & Hospice, 601 Park Street, Honesdale, PA 18431.
