Reverend Frederick J. Howard, 80, of Honesdale, died on Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at his home. He was preceded in death by his wife Sylvia Harned Howard in 2002. The couple married on July 18, 1976. Born on March 19, 1934 in Austin, TX, he was the son of the late James Aubrey and Mary Almeda Howard. He was a graduate of the University of Texas and later graduated from the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest. He Served as Rector of St.Peter’s Episcopal Church in Amarillo, TX from 1971 to 1977 before joining the Episcopal Church’s National headquarters in New York. During that time he assisted with Church of the Ascension, The Church of St. Luke and St. Matthew, both of Brooklyn and St. James Episcopal Church in Callicoon, NY. Following the death of his wife, he retired to Honesdale where he enjoyed spending time on his porch watching birds and the other wildlife. A sports enthusiast, Fred especially enjoyed rooting for the Texas Longhorns Football team and Steelers fan. A true Texan, he also enjoyed barbecuing, and spending time with friends and family. Fred loved Shetland Sheepdogs, especially Pal, his most recent companion. Surviving him is his son David Howard; his brothers Robert Howard and wife, Billie of IL and James Howard and wife, Diane of TX; Leanne Weiner, grandchildren, great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Bertram Howard. Memorial services will be held at St James, Calicoon, NY on July 20th at 10:30 AM.
