Paul Gerard Farrell, 89 of Honesdale, died on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at his home. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Dolores “Sis” Bishop on November 23, 2013. The couple would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on October 24, 2014. Born on May 3, 1924 at the family home in Egypt, Mount Pleasant Twp., he was the son of the late Frank and Anna McGraw Farrell. He grew up working on the family farm and graduated from Pleasant Mount High School. He also did carpentry and masonry work in the area when he was younger. Later he moved to Honesdale and for 40 years, he was employed at Katz Underwear Factory. Following his retirement from Katz’s, he worked at Wayne Highlands School District as a substitute custodian and later worked at Stephen’s Pharmacy part time. Paul was a life member of the Alerts Hook and Ladder #2 Fire Co. and a former member of Texas #4 Fire Co. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus and the Lake and Brook Club. Paul was a faithful member of St. John the Evangelist Parish where he served as an usher. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. Paul loved to cook and took great pride in his vegetable and flower gardens. He was proud of his Irish heritage and shared that love with his family singing traditional Irish songs. Most of all, Paul loved being with his family and adored his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Surviving is his son Jim Farrell and wife Judy of Honesdale; his daughters Eileen Diehl and husband Donnie of Damascus and Kathy McConnell and husband Joe of Beach Lake; his sisters Julia Leonard of Rock Lake and Theresa Farrell of Washington, D.C.; grandchildren, Michele Avery, Greg Diehl and wife Margo and Nikki Diehl, Jason and Lacey Farrell, Tyler and Hannah McConnell; great grandchildren Victoria and Zach Tyler and Mikayla Diehl; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers Francis and John Farrell; sisters Elizabeth O’Hara, Beatrice Farrell, Mary O’Hara, and Anne Lynch; a brother-in-law Jack “Bish” Bishop. His family would like to thank Mary Ellen Douglas, Dr. William Dewar, Jessica Tuttle, Sue Mignery, and Wayne Memorial Home Health and Hospice Staff for their care. They would also like to thank Father Langan and Father Reichlan of St. John the Evangelist Parish. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, April 5th at 10 am at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Honesdale. Interment will follow in St. John’s Cemetery.
