Matthew Pons

Matthew Pons, 12, of Honesdale, died on Monday, January 19, 2015 at Westchester Medical Center, Valhalla, NY following injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Born on August 31, 2002 in the Bronx, NY he is the son of Maria S. Gonzalez Pons of Honesdale and the late Pablo “Paul” Luis Pons who preceded him in death in the same accident. Matthew was an High Honor Roll student at Wayne Highlands Middle School in the seventh grade. He was a math genius, enjoying that subject in school. An active boy, Matthew loved Karate and was a red belt at Elite Martial Arts. He enjoyed playing baseball in the Honesdale Little League. His greatest passion was soccer. If he was not playing soccer, he was cheering for the Barcelona Sporting Club or the Argentine National Team. His favorite players were Christiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi and was thrilled to receive autographed jerseys by each player this past Christmas. He enjoyed trips with his family to his favorite restaurant, the Rustic Kitchen at Mohegan Sun. A loving and caring young man, Matthew was following his father’s footsteps as a self-less person, always putting others before himself. He and his father were inseparable always playing video games together. He loved his mother and many times through out the day would go through a ritual of kisses. One kiss on each cheek, on kiss on the lips, and the last one on the forehead. And if he messed up the order he had to start all over again. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his paternal grandparents, Luis and Maria Pons of Carbondale; maternal grandparents, Carlos and Paquita Gonzales of Ecuador; his uncles and aunts, Peter and Carla Pons of Honesdale, Pablo Gonzalez of Ecuador and Luisa Pons of Texas; his cousin Julian Pons; many friends. A Funeral Mass for Matthew and his father will be celebrated on Friday, Jan. 23rd at St. Mary Magdalen Church, Honesdale at 10am. The family will receive friends on Thursday at Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale from 4 to 7.
