Matthew Luke Selvaggi, 36, of Honesdale, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at his home.

Born on October 16, 1980 in Smithtown, NY, he is the son of Michael W. and Irene J. Ficht Selvaggi of Honesdale. Matt attended Honesdale High School and was a member of the wrestling team. He won the District 2 Junior Varsity Championship Finals for his weight class in 1998.

He was a US Navy veteran of the War on Terror enlisting in 2002. He was first stationed in Bremerton, WA and later Groton CT. He received an honorable discharge in 2011.

Matt attended classes at Lackawanna College’s Lake Region Center.

Matt enjoyed music and playing guitar. He also enjoyed playing chess, watching movies and anything science related, especially weather and astronomy.

Also surviving are his brothers Michael Joseph Selvaggi and companion Kelly Schuman of Lakeville and Stephen Selvaggi and companion Valerie Martin of Honesdale; his wife and friend Elizabeth Hollis Selvaggi of Honesdale; his close friend Samantha Brengel and her family; nephews Devon, Troy and Nicholas Selvaggi; aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Dominic and Maria Selvaggi and maternal grandparents Richard and Ruth Ficht.

His family will receive friends on Monday, January 9th, 4 to 7 at Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale. A brief service with military honors will be held at 7pm.

Because of Matt’s love of animals, his family requests that donations be made to the Dessin Animal Shelter, 138 Miller Dr. Honesdale, PA 18431.
