Martin James Kingston, 68, of Honesdale, died on Friday, January 15, 2021 at Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, the former Mary Ellen Gibbons. The couple married on October 6, 1979.

Born on November 10, 1952 in Trenton, NJ, he was the son of the late James F. and Rosemarie (Scheideler) Kingston. He was a graduate of Honesdale High School, class of 1971 and later attended Slippery Rock College.

Marty spent 37 years working for various railroads, finally retiring from Norfolk Southern in 2012.

An avid outdoorsman, Marty enjoyed fishing, hunting, hiking, skiing and sailing. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing baseball and softball. He was a member of the National Ski Patrol working at Masthope and a member of the Cherry Ridge Fishing Club. He was also a faithful member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale.

Marty was very active in his sons’ lives helping out in any activity they participated in. He was on the Board of Directors for the Honesdale Soccer Club for several years and was part of the committee that secured additional playing fields to their complex at the County Farm in Beach Lake. Later in life he obtained his PIAA certification and refereed soccer for local school districts.

Marty will be remembered most for his genuine love and interest in his family, friends and community. He sincerely cared for them all and always took the time to talk to whomever he met.

Marty is survived by his sons J. Miles Kingston and wife Katie and John Joseph “Jack” Kingston all of Honesdale; his brother Stephen Kingston and wife Geralyn of Townsend, DE; his sister Judy Heller and husband Randy of Honesdale; grandchildren Cotton, Harkin and Tansy Kingston; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sister Mary Ellen Kingston.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, January 22nd at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Honesdale at 10 am. All attending are required to wear a mask. A celebration of his life for family and friends will be announced at a later date. Arrangements by Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale.
