Marie Jean Weniger (Crockenberg)

Marie Jean Crockenberg Weniger of Waymart, PA, died peacefully surrounded by her family on July 6, 2026 at Wayne Woodlands Manor, where she has resided for the past 4 years. Marie Jean was born in Honesdale on December 28, 1929 to Frank X. and Margaret E. (Hatton) Crockenberg, graduating from Honesdale Catholic School in 1948 and College Misericordia in 1952 with a BS in Home Economics. For many years Marie Jean taught in local schools as a home economics teacher and also as a long-term and short-term substitute teacher, imparting her cooking, baking and sewing skills to generations of students.
Marie Jean married the late Gerald J. Weniger, Sr. on April 6, 1953 and when he established his business, Weniger Electronics, used her skills to assist in the business by teaching customers how to use their newly-purchased sewing machines and microwave ovens. Marie Jean and Jerry were high school sweethearts and Jerry (class president) crowned Marie Jean the “Snow Queen” when they were seniors.
Marie Jean was also very active in community organizations such as the Wayne Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Women’s Club and Hose Co. #1 Fire Company Auxiliary, as well as serving St. John the Evangelist Church as a minister of Holy Communion at Mass and to the home bound, choir member, member and officer of the Altar and Rosary Society and Catholic Daughters of America. Marie Jean and Jerry were also faithful adorers in the Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration chapel and in the early years of the chapel were responsible for scheduling adorers for the midnight to 6:00am time spots. In retirement they both enjoyed volunteering as drivers for the Red Cross blood mobiles, the American Cancer Society and delivering meals for the Wayne County Area on Aging Office. Marie Jean and Jerry also enjoyed traveling and spending the winter months in Ft. Myers, FL.
She will be lovingly remembered for her joyous singing, dancing and reciting her favorite “Don’t Quit” poem to all she loved.

Marie Jean is survived by her four children, Margaret M Pender (Donald) and Charles F Weniger (Patricia), of Honesdale, Gerald J Weniger, Jr (Jody) of Bradenton, FL and Jean Marie Viscounte (Jonathan) of Ambler, PA.
Marie Jean and Jerry often said how proud they were of the wonderful spouses their children were blessed with.
They have twelve grandchildren, Mary Ursich, Emily Jackson (William), Timothy Pender (Lindsey), Donald Pender III (Anita), Rebecca Pender (Nathaniel Oncea), Gerald Weniger (Grace), Ellen DiMola (Michael), Camilyn Leavitt (Christian), Ashten Weniger ( Brian Nock), Anthony Viscounte (Kaitlyn), Domenic Viscounte and Gabrielle Oruch (Brandon), and 19 great grandchildren, Cassie Ursich, Alicia (Atticus Speis), Tyler, Brenna, and Reed Jackson, Owen and Keegan Pender, Jai, Rajan and Kiran Pender, Maya, Noah and Avery Weniger, Max and Graciella DiMola, Jett and Louella Leavitt, and Cameron Oruch. Marie Jean deeply loved and was loved by them all.
She is also survived by numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Marie Jean was predeceased by a great grandson, Augustus Jackson and several sisters and brothers-in-law.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Hessling Murray Funeral Home, 428 Main St., Honesdale, PA 18431, with visitation on Thursday July 9 from 4-7 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Mary Magdalen Church, 416 Church St., Honesdale at 10:00 am on Friday July 10. Internment following at St. Magdalen Cemetery.

The family is deeply grateful to these organizations, and also the Rosary ministry at Wayne Woodlands and Rev. William Langan for the physical and spiritual enrichment they provided to our dear mother during her final years.
