Marie Brussells Reifler, 85, of Cherry Ridge, Honesdale, passed away of natural causes, at home, on June 1, 2018. She was born in Cherry Ridge, on August 8, 1932, to the late Matthew and Mignon Crockenberg Brussells. On July 2, 1955, she was married to Robert Reifler.
A graduate of Honesdale High School, class of 1950, Marie attended Marywood College, in Scranton. She majored in elementary education and graduated in 1954. Her first teaching position was a second grade class in Hancock, New York. The following year she accepted a job in the Honesdale School District and taught sixth grade at J.J. Koehler for a number of years before she moved to the Stourbridge building to teach first grade. Marie remained with first grade until she retired in 2000. Her teaching career spanned 46 years.
A lifelong member of St. John’s Roman Catholic Church, Honesdale, she served as a Eucharistic Minister to homebound parishioners and taught CCD classes for many years.
She was a member of the Catholic Daughters, the Cherry Ridge Planning Committee, Cherry Ridge Grange, Pomona Grange, PSEA, NEA, and WHEA.
Marie is survived by a sister, JoAnne Haggerty, Honesdale; a daughter, Suzanne, Honesdale; a grandson, Craig Reifler (Elizabeth), Hamlin; a nephew, Joseph Haggerty (Lisa); great-grand children, Benjamin and Hannah Reifler; great-niece and great-nephew, Meghan and Ryan Haggerty.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert (1984), and a brother, Frederick Brussells (1991).
A special thank you goes to Charlotte Compton for her dedication and kindness in her care of Marie.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 8th at St. Mary Magdalen Church, Honesdale at 10 am. All attending are asked to meet at the church. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Friends may visit Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale on Thursday, 4 to 7.
