Margaret (Marge) Hook of Bethany, died on Tuesday, March 2, 2021 at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center. She was born on January 28, 1927 to the late Anna and Anthony Poloncic. Her husband, Joseph Hook, died in 2009.

Marge graduated from Pleasant Mount High School and Wayne Commercial School. Her work history included many years as a legal secretary. She also worked in the staff library and revenue office at Farview State Hospital. Marge went to Highlights for Children in 1964 and worked for the founders, Dr. and Mrs. Garry C. Myers. In 1980 she retired from Highlights as an Editorial Assistant.

Marge and Joe both enjoyed traveling. They went to Europe, Turkey, Morocco, Australia, New Zealand, a wild-life safari in Kenya, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Galapagos Islands, Macho Picho, Ecuador, Costa Rico, Bermuda, Mexico, East Berlin in 1988, the 50 states and Canada.

They had a dozen articles and stories published in Children’s Digest, International Travel News, Susquehanna Life Magazine, and Scholastic , Inc.. Most of their published topics were about places where they had traveled, or local historical persons and places. Marge was the author and Joe the photographer.

For many years she did research and wrote the text about the historic buildings, which appeared on the Honesdale National Bank/Wayne County Historical Society’s yearly calendars.

During their retirement years they both volunteered at many local organizations. The friends they made while volunteering helped fill a void in Marge’s life during her widowhood. Some of the organizations where she had volunteered were Hospice St. Johns, American Cancer Society, Wayne County Historical Society, Dorflinger Glass Museum, and the Wildflower Music Festival. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church, and a 50-year member of the Women’s Club of Honesdale. She played bridge, cards, and Mah Jongg. Marge was an avid reader of the classics and histories.

She is survived by a niece Karen Deen, her husband Gary and daughter Anna Durham, NC. She is also survived by her extended family: Dan, Ashley, Dustin, and Jessica Liptak. She was preceded in death by her sister, Elsie Nonnenmacher and friend, Janice Liptak.

As per her request, Marge willed her body for studies in the furtherance of scientific medicine to the Pennsylvania Humanity Gifts Registry. She also requested that there be no visitation hours. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Dessin Animal Shelter, 138 Miller Dr. Honesdale, PA.
