John “Jack” Philip Rumain

Jack Rumain of Honesdale, PA, died Thursday, June 4, 2015 at Geisinger Hospital in Danville after an aggressive battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

Born on December 27, 1950 in Bayonne NJ, he is the son of Vincent J. Rumain of Bayonne, NJ and the late, Emily C. Katusa Rumain.

Jack attended St. Joseph’s grade school in Bayonne, NJ followed by St. Peters College in Jersey City, NJ. He took a short break after graduation to travel through Europe. After returning home, he took a job as a shop teacher in Newark, NJ.

Following his teaching career, he enjoyed a variety of occupations including Police Officer with the Rutherford, NJ Police Department, owner of Jack’s Beach Lake Sports Shop and bus driver for Woodloch Pines.

Jack had many hobbies. He was an avid collector, one of his favorites being clocks. He enjoyed traveling and has gone to Alaska, California, Mississippi, Canada and even Woodstock. He loved the outdoors and taking trips with his best friend, Fr. Bryan Wright, to go camping and 4-wheeling.

Jack was a member of multiple organizations including The Knights of Columbus, his fraternity Lambda Sigma Rho, and many church groups.

He was a devout Catholic and a member of St. John’s Parish in Honesdale. He took on many different roles in the church including scripture readings, prayer groups, adoration hour and transportation.

In addition to his father, he is survived by his brother, Vincent J. Rumain, Jr. and wife, Millie Navaro, of Long Branch, NJ; a son, Michael Rumain and wife, Lisa of Clinton, MS; a daughter, Emily Derrick and husband, John, of Honesdale, PA; a daughter, Catherine Rumain of Honesdale, PA; his former wife and lifelong friend, Kerry Thompson, of Honesdale, PA; grandchildren Brynn and Eden Derrick and Jasmine and Joey Van Velkinburgh.

He was a friend to everyone and never forgot a name. He was always willing to help anyone who needed it. Jack will be remembered as a man full of love and laughter and a smile on his face.

Jack’s wise words in tough times, “This too shall pass.”

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, June 9th at 10 am at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Honesdale. Interment will follow in St. John’s Cemetery. Friends may visit Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale on Monday from 4 to 7.
