John J. Vanderwell, 73 of Honesdale, died on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at Wayne Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family.

Born on July 20, 1947 at the family home in Honesdale, he was the son of the late Gerrit Vanderwell Sr. and Dorothy Barnes Panfili. He was a graduate of Honesdale High School, class of 1965 and later attended Lackawanna Junior College. John was a US Army veteran who served in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in 1968.

Over the years, John held many jobs and retired from John Bonham Road Supply where he worked in sales. He was a proud member of the Wayne County Fair board where he was the director of security. For many years, John served as constable in Dyberry Township. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1858 and the VFW in Honesdale.

Recently, John enjoyed spending his winters in Florida and was happy to buy a home there. He enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Cricket Hill Golf Club. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a former member of the Welcome Lake Hunting Club.

John loved his Labrador Retrievers Brownie and Jake who preceded him in death.

Surviving are his daughters Deanna DeNoie and husband Roland and Erica Murray and husband Bradly all of Honesdale; his companion Irina Hendrickson of Honesdale; his brother Gerrit Vanderwell Jr. and wife Kathy of Honesdale; his sisters Susan Vanderwell of North Carolina, Joanne Martin of Florida, and Stacey Stack and companion Michael Montelione of West Chester, PA; his former wife and friend Sheila Brown of Honesdale. He is also survived by his grandchildren Gavin and Brayden Murray and Briana DeNoie; several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 22nd at Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale at 1 o’clock. The family will receive friends, 11 until the time of service. Interment with military honor will follow in Indian Orchard Cemetery in Honesdale.

Memorial contributions can be made to the donor’s favorite charity in John’s name.
