John J. Gumpper

John “Jack” J. Gumpper, 87, of Honesdale, died on Sunday, July 12, 2026 at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

He was born on August 6, 1938 in Honesdale, he was the son of the late Henry J. and Helen M. (Rickert) Gumpper. He was a graduate of Honesdale Catholic High School, class of 1957 and later received and associate degree from Lackawanna Junior College.

Jack enjoyed a successful career as a sales representative, working for notable companies including Sears, Roebuck and Co., Moore Business Forms, Katz Underwear Co., Circuit City, and Tri-State Power Sports. In addition to his sales career, he ventured into real estate before retiring.

An active community member, Jack held numerous affiliations that showcased his dedication to service. He was a life member of the Alerts Fire Co. and a member of the Pike-Wayne County Board of Realtors. He demonstrated his passion for the harness racing community as he was involved with the Pennsylvania Harness Horseman’s Association. He was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, he was also part of the Honesdale Lions Club and served as past president and board member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Jack was deeply committed to the Wayne County Fair, serving as concessions coordinator and judge for harness racing, roles he cherished for many years. His contributions earned him the honor of becoming an honorary member of the Wayne County Fair Association.

Jack was a faithful member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale.

Surviving is his sister, Patricia Romich of Hawley; several nieces and nephews and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Ronald Gumpper and sister, Anne Dieterich.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, July 23rd at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Honesdale at 10 am. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Friends may visit Hessling Murray Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale on Wednesday, July 22nd, 4 to 7.
