Joan M. Smith, 75, of Honesdale, died on Monday, July 2, 2018 at Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, William J. Smith. The couple married on May 29, 1971.

Born on February 22, 1943 in Herrick Township, she was the daughter of the late Leo and Kathryn (Gorel) Gosciewski. She was a graduate of Forest City Regional High School and later received a degree in applied statistics from The Pennsylvania State University and a masters degree from Villanova University. Joan continued her studies at the University of Scranton receiving her teaching certificate.

She began her career at Wyeth Laboratories and later taught physics and science at Western Wayne until her retirement.

In her retirement, Joan was an active quilter and member of two area quilt clubs. She also enjoyed gardening. She was a volunteer for the Wayne Pike Literacy Program and a member of the TOPS Club, Inc. A loving grandmother, she enjoyed spending time with her grandsons, Caleb and Lukas.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter Kathryn A. Smith and companion Clarence Myers of Honesdale; her son Martin J. Smith and wife Crystal of Jefferson Township; her grandsons Caleb W. Lavelle and Lukas J. Smith; her brothers John Gosciewski of Michigan and Joseph Gosciewski of Uniondale; her sister Margaret Prezelski of Uniondale; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brother Leo Gosciewski and nephew Walter Prezelski.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 7th at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Honesdale at noon. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Friends may visit Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale on Saturday, 9 to 11:30.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Wayne Pike Literacy Program, 1406 N. Main St. Honesdale, PA 18431, Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 600 Baltimore Dr., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702, Pleasant Mount Quilters or Trackside Quilters.
