Jean Marie Tuman, 88, of Honesdale, passed into eternal life on Wednesday, December 29, 2021 at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale PA.

Born in Carbondale on August 20, 1933 and raised in Archbald, Jean was the daughter of the late Bartholomew and Helen (Novitski) Ford. She was a graduate of Archbald High School and Lackawanna Business School. Upon graduation she worked at Daystrum, Archbald PA.

Jean married William G. “Jerry” Tuman in 1957 and lived most of her married life in Honesdale. Jerry preceded her in death, passing away on June 4, 2016.

The cornerstones of Jean’s life were her family and her faith. Blessed with 8 children, 22 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren, Jean was a devoted wife, who together with Jerry, created a welcoming, loving, and laughter filled home. Jean was at its heart. Whether it was trying new recipes for her Sunday dinners or cheering on her children and grandchildren in their myriad of activities, Jean poured herself into her family. She especially cherished the family’s annual vacation at the Jersey shore, now in its 28th year. Nothing gave her more pleasure than experiencing her extended family all together.

Jean was smart and curious and loved to learn. She enjoyed taking day trips and organized several bus trips to see plays on Broadway. She loved to travel and fondly recalled piling kids in the car to go on family camping outings and vacations to Disney. Her later trips included tours of Rome, England, and California. She felt privileged to be in St. Peter’s Square when Mother Teresa was beatified in 2003.

Besides her devotion to her family, Jean centered her life in her Catholic faith and bequeathed to her children this solid foundation. As a faithful and active member of St. John the Evangelist Parish, she served as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist and particularly enjoyed bringing Communion to the homebound and those in nursing homes. She was a founding member of the parish’s Eucharistic Adoration Chapel, active in its Altar and Rosary Society, and a member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court St. Martin. She especially treasured her time as a member of the Sacred Heart Prayer Group and the Charismatic Prayer Group. Jean was also a founding member of the Wayne Pike Chapter of Pennsylvanians for Human Life.

Jean found the perfect outlet for her secretarial skills and lively faith when she began working in the Parish office in 1980. She retired thirty six years later, having touched the lives of countless people in the parish community and beyond. Jean had the rare ability to really listen to others. All who met her were moved by her kindness, compassion, prayerfulness, and trust in God.

Jean is survived by her children: daughter Patricia (Lipperini) and husband Neil of Collingswood, NJ; Bill and wife Coleen of Honesdale; Jim and wife Ceil of Croton-on-Hudson, NY; Dan and wife Stacey of Hillsboro VA; Michael and wife Ellen of Lake Ariel; Judy (Burinsky) and husband Randy of Fawn Grove, PA; Anne (Grivas) and husband Dave of Springfield, PA; twenty-two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. A daughter, Susan Marie, preceded her in death in 1973.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, Jan. 5th at St. John the Evangelist Church, 150 Terrace St, Honesdale at 10 am. Interment will follow in St. John’s Cemetery. Friends may visit Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale, on Tuesday, 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Parish, Honesdale PA.
