Jean Evelyn Polley Turano, 90, of Honesdale died peacefully Saturday, October 29, 2016 surrounded by her family after an illness.  She was the widow of Robert G. Turano, Sr. who preceded her in death on November 14, 2013.  They were married 65 years.

 

Jean was born in Honesdale.  She was the daughter of the late Horton A. and Elsie (Holloway) Polley.

 

Jean graduated from HHS, class of 1944.  Following graduation she was employed by the OBD (Office of Dependency Benefits) Civilian Dept. Federal Government, Newark, NJ.  She was one of the first employees of the Honesdale Sears, Roebuck & Catalogue store.  She was the executive director of the Arthritis Foundation of Wayne County and in 1964 she received the Distinctive Service Award.  She was the secretary and co-owner of the original Fairlane Bowlodrome in Honesdale.  She was correspondent for the Scranton Tribune – Scrantonian Newspapers, Honesdale office for 23 years.  She was a lifetime member of the Honesdale Country Club.  Jean was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale.

 

Surviving are her five children; Mary Hamilton and husband Bob of Montgomery Village, MD; Robert Turano Jr. and wife Anne of Honesdale; Irene Lagler and husband Jeffrey of Montgomery Village, MD; Randall Turano and wife Catherine of Stroudsburg, PA; Nancy Propst and husband Michael of Honesdale.  Her grandchildren Bobby, Katie, Grant, Brian, Luke, Carrie, Lauren, Sara, Jennifer, Becky, Fred, Ben, Steven, Andrew and Kristen.  Two step-grandchildren Christopher and Samantha and nine great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her sister Dorothy (Ralph) Barnes and two brothers Robert (Nell) and Jack (Doris) Polley and a grandson Christopher Turano.

 

The family would like to thank the compassionate caregivers for their loving care.

 

As per her request, cremation will be held.  Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 2nd at St. Mary Magdalen Church, Honesdale at 10am.  Interment will follow in Indian Orchard Cemetery.

 

The family will receive friends on Tuesday at Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale, 4 to 7.
