Janet T. Stegner

Janet T. Stegner, 89, a lifelong resident of Honesdale, passed to eternal life Saturday morning May 1, 2021. She was born July 1, 1931 to the late Robert E. and Leila A. (Hessling) Stegner. She was the sister of the late Dr. Robert J. Stegner and of Joan M. Stegner and Grace Keen who survive her.  Her father was one of the six sons of John H. and Theresa Sporer Stegner who ran the J.H.Stegner and Sons Grocers and the Stegner Bakery in Honesdale. Also surviving are nephews Robert Keen and wife Nancy Mohn, and Philip Keen and wife Sonja.

A graduate of Honesdale High School, class of 1949, she later graduated from the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester majoring in piano and trumpet. She taught music at the Narrowsburg High School for 10 years and then taught privately in the family home in Honesdale. Janet had the knack of pushing students to be their best without them realizing it. She enjoyed her students and was very proud of their accomplishments.

The home was often filled with the sound of piano duets played with her twin sister Joan.

She sang in the St. Mary’s choir for many years which was directed by her mother, the organist, and included all 6 members of the immediate family.

She enjoyed gardening, growing the numerous flowers that adorned the property and many of the vegetables which they cooked according to recipes handed down generation to generation.

Together with her brother and sister she was devoted to taking care of her parents and keeping them in the family home.

A graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in Bethany Cemetery.
