James W. Byrnes, 94, of Honesdale, died on Wednesday, June 2, 2021 at Allied Services Skilled Nursing and Rehab Center in Scranton. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Lorraine Cheely who died on February 5, 2003. The couple married on May 26, 1956.


Born on July 25, 1926 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late James W. and Catherine (Dohm) Byrnes. Jim was a proud US Army veteran of World War II.


For 29 years, he lived in Baldwin, NY and was an electrician for the Local IBEW in New York City. He later moved to Honesdale where he became an active member of the community. He was a member of the American Legion Post 254, the Knight of Columbus Council 363, St. John the Evangelist Parish and participated in its Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel.


A talented woodworker, Jim would make furniture for his family and became well known for the dollhouses he would make for family and friends. In recent years he would make dollhouses to be auctioned off as a fundraiser for St. Joseph’s Center in Scranton. He also enjoyed gardening and collecting stamps.


Surviving are his children, Peter Byrnes and wife Cindy, James Byrnes and wife Donna Grissom, Mary Hayman and husband James, Catherine Byrnes, Veronica Byrnes and Elaine Byrnes; his daughter-in-law Imogene Hardy Byrnes; his longtime companion, Shirley Ostrander; grandchildren Tennille Dozier, Denise Entrican, Michael Byrnes, Greg Byrnes, James Byrnes, Amanda Hayman, Sean Moran, Shannon Moran, Chelsea Moran, Margarita Marzovilla, Egor Marzovilla and Alex Stuffer; great grandchildren Bryce and Blake Dozier, Jackson, Guiliana, Julian Byrnes; .


He was preceded in death by his son Robert Byrnes and his wife Charlene.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 8th at St. John the Evangelist Church in Honesdale at 11 am. Friends may visit Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale on Tuesday, 9 to 10:30. Interment with military honors will be in Calverton National Cemetery on Wednesday at 12:30.
