Obituaries » James E. Burke Share your Memorial with Family & Friends James E. Burke, 96, of Honesdale, died on Friday, June 5, 2026 at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center in Honesdale. He was born on May 31, 1930 in Waymart, the son of the late Edward J. and Ruth M. (Price) Burke. He was a US Army veteran who served during the Korean War as a Supply Specialist and attained the rank of Corporal. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with Bronze Star and the United States Service Medal. He received an accounting degree from the University of Scranton. Throughout his distinguished career as a cost accountant, James worked at several notable companies, including Ansco, General Electric, and he ultimately retired from IBM. Jim was a proud member of the American Legion, Post 254 in Honesdale, and held an honorary membership at the Cherry Ridge Fishing Club. He was also a faithful parishioner at St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale and a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 363, where he actively participated in community service. In his younger years, James found joy in playing softball and golfing, hobbies that brought him much joy. Surviving is his brother, Joseph Burke and wife, Mary Jane of Honesdale; his nephews, Thomas Burke and wife Becky of Honesdale and Kevin Burke and wife Pam of Hawley; his niece, Karen Martin of Honesdale. He is also survived by many great nieces and nephews, Michael and Rozalyn Burke, Jordan and Jaclyn Burke, Kristin and Gabriel Quinones, Josilyn Martin, Karli Martin, Konnor Burke, Jacqueline Burke, Alaina Burke; great great nieces and nephews, Olyvea, Nathan, Dylan Burke, Addison & Aubrey Quinones, Camden Burke. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 16th at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Honesdale at 10 am. Interment will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, Honesdale. Friends may visit Hessling Murray Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale on Monday, 4 to 6.
