Hubert Edward McDonnell, 62, of Cherry Ridge, son of the late Hubert Edward McDonnell and Ann Cronin McDonnell passed away July 30, 2014 on Cape Cod. He is survived by his loving wife Maryann Hickey McDonnell . Ed was born January 14, 1952 and grew up on the family dairy farm in Cherry Ridge. He attended a one-room schoolhouse in Hoadleys and graduated from Honesdale High school in 1969. He served in the United States Army stationed in Alaska where he enjoyed skiing on Alaska’s high mountains. Ed and his wife Maryann built a home on the farm in Cherry Ridge. He was employed by the United States Post Office in Wilkes Barre for 30 years. He was an avid reader particularly enjoying biographies and history. He learned to play chess when he was 6 years old and passed the skills along to his son Kevin and grandson Mat. Time spent with his grandson Mat was always a highlight to his week. He enjoyed yard work, spending time with family and friends and vacationing on Cape Cod, Ma. Ed will be sadly missed by his family. He is survived by a son Kevin McDonnell of California, two grandsons Mat McDonnell of Honesdale and Orion McDonnell of Spokane Washington. He will be missed by his dear friend and sister Margaret Brewster . He is survived by many nieces and nephews. He was a favorite uncle to Robin Sampson , Bob Brewster, Jamie Mc Nerny, and a favorite great uncle who always took an interest in the life and goals of Maggie, Patrick and Curtis Sampson. Ed was predeceased in death by his brother James F. McDonnell. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 16th at Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale at 11 am. The family will receive friends from 9:30 to service time. Interment will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Cherry Ridge. Thank you to Dr. Martin Hyzinski and the staff at Scranton Regional Hospital who cared for Ed through his fight with cancer this last year.
