Harold J. Gilhool, 74, of Honesdale, died at home on Saturday, April 18, 2015. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, the former Margaret Jean Hessling. The couple was married on November 27, 1965.

Born on September 4, 1940, in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Frank and Catherine Hughes Gilhool. He was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Harold was a retired manager of the Honesdale State Store. He was also a Real Estate Agent at Davis R. Chant.

He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and a member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Parish both in Honesdale.

He was a volunteer at Hospice of Wayne Memorial Hospital as well as Wayne County Library and the Wayne County Historical Society.

The family would like to thank Wayne Memorial Home Health Services and Hospice.

He is also survived by his daughter, Ann Marie Simons and husband, Robert of Beach Lake, his son, Joseph Gilhool and his wife, Dana of Montrose, and his youngest daughter, Christine Collins and husband, Kevin of Severn, MD. His grandchildren include Bridget Simons, Meghan, Brennan and Madison Gilhool, and Grace and Kieran Collins.

Also surviving are sisters and brothers: Mary Vosefski, Frank Gilhool and wife, Ann, Florence McCarty and husband, Tom, Jean Vosefski and husband, Walter, Kieran Gilhool, and wife, Joann, and Grace Bognatz, and husband, Donald, and sister-in-law, Ann Hessling Schroeder. He has several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by brothers, John, Paul, and William Gilhool and a sister, Ann Gilhool Howe, as well as a niece, Maureen Gilhool.

As per his request, cremation was held at the Maple Hill Crematory, Archbald, PA. A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at 10:00 AM at St. Mary Magdalene Church, Honesdale. Interment will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Honesdale.

Visiting hours will be at the Hessling Funeral Home 428 Main Street, Honesdale, PA on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 from 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 414 Church St., Honesdale, PA 18431 the Wayne County Public Library, 1406 N. Main St., Honesdale, PA 18431 or any Honesdale Area Volunteer Fire Company.
