Grace Stegner Keen, 97, a lifelong resident of Honesdale, passed to eternal life March 23, 2022 in Simsbury, Connecticut.  She was born December 27, 1924 to the late Robert E. and Leila A. (Hessling) Stegner.  She was married to the late Philip Murray Keen.

She is survived by sons Robert Keen and wife Nancy Mohn, in Connecticut, with whom she lived the last 15 years, and Philip Keen and wife Sonja, grandsons Daryl and Michael and great grandchildren, Kylee, Preston, Kaden and Kenzie, all in Texas.

She was predeceased by her brother Dr. Robert J. Stegner and sister Janet Stegner.  A sister Joan Stegner survives her.  Her father was one of six sons of John H. and Theresa Sporer Stegner who ran the J.H. Stegner and Sons Grocers and the Stegner Bakery in Honesdale.

Grace graduated from Honesdale Catholic High School and Marywood College majoring in piano.  She taught English and music for several years at Waymart High School where she is remembered for producing the operetta “Windmills of Holland”.  She then taught privately in the home in Honesdale.  She enjoyed her students and was very proud of their accomplishments.  She sang in St. Mary’s choir for many years which was directed by her mother, the organist.

She enjoyed taking care of the Park Street home and the family cottage at Elk Lake.  On hot summer days she loved to pack the car with her sons and their neighborhood playmates and head to the lake.  When her sons began to ski at Poco-North, she joined them and learned to ski.

The home was often filled with the sound of her piano.  Her sons remember early morning wake-up calls of her favorite Chopin’s Fantasie-Impromtu when they were running late for school.  Grace enjoyed cooking and baking according to family recipes handed down generation to generation.

A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family.   Arrangements by Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale.
