After a long and courageous battle, George Reed Sandercock, 70, of Greentown, passed away on Tuesday, January 1, 2019 at Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore.

Born on February 13, 1948 in Honesdale, he was the son of the late George S. and Shirley Yerkes Sandercock.  He was also preceded in death by his sister Margie Ann Sandercock.

Reed was a graduate of Honesdale High School, class of 1966 and in 1970 received his teaching degree from East Stroudsburg University.  In 1970, he began teaching math and science for the Wayne Highlands School District.  He was the chair of the math department for many years.  From 1984 to 1997 Reed was the assistant coach for the Lady Hornets basketball team.  He was inducted into the Wayne Area Sports Hall of Fame in September 2004. From 2006 until his retirement in 2009, he coached the Junior High girls basketball team.  As a concerned citizen, he served on the Texas Township Planning Commission and the Texas Township Municipal Authority.

He was an active and faithful member of the Hawley United Methodist Church where, over a period of years, he was a member of the Joyful Ringers Bell Choir, the Board of Trustees, Chair of the Education Team, and a member of the Staff Parish Relations Committee.

Throughout Reed’s life, he enjoyed skiing, snowmobiling, hiking, biking and kayaking. For many years, he played in the Wayne County Softball League.  He and his wife, Dianne, were avid Yankee fans with the goal to attend a game in every MLB park.  During their retirement they were able to enjoy a game in 22 of the 30 stadiums. They also enjoyed geocaching, traveling, and long walks with his beloved black Labrador, Kate.

Surviving are his daughter Marci (Rex) Brand of Hawley; his son Brian of Manhattan; his devoted wife and best friend, Dianne; her daughters, Lisa (Chris) Madeksiak of Philadelphia, Trisha (Barry) Earls of Dayton, OH and Kara (Shannon)  Byerly of Columbus, OH; 13 grandchildren Ali, Lauren, Matt, Chris, and Nick Brand; Sarah Jane, Gwen, Sydney and Ian Madeksiak; Jacob and Emily Earls; Nick and Ryann Byerly.  Also surviving are his niece Stacy Brown and nephew Grant Gregory and numerous cousins.

Friends may visit Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale on Friday, January 11, from 3pm to 7pm.  Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 12th at the Hawley United Methodist Church, 315 Church Street, Hawley, PA 18428 at 10 am.  The interment will be private.
