Frank “Glen” Ames of Hawley passed away November 8, 2016 at the Sunrise Home Health & Hospice, Provo, Utah. He was 89 and was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years Dorothy Agnes Smith Ames, and an infant son Dale Paul Ames.  He is survived by Sandra Jean Ames his daughter, Scott F Ames his son, as well as three grandchildren Tyler Nguyen Ames, Ryan Nguyen Ames, Kelsie Anh Ames.

 

He was born September 21, 1927 on River Road, White Mills, PA and is the son of Clarence Lorenzo Ames and Helen May Ames. He was raised by his mother Helen and step father, Orville E. Rose.

 

He joined the US Army 6, Nov 1945 and did basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Pulaski, Missouri. After basic training he departed for the European theater on April 20, 1946, and served in the 3rd Army, 288th Combat Engineers in Germany around Garmisch-Partenkirchen Germany where he drove truck and command cars until discharge at Fort Dix April 1st, 1947. His ambition as a young man was to fly P-51 Mustangs during the war, but his eyesight kept him out of the air corps. Later in life he was able to fly a P-51 at Stallion 51 in Kissimmee Florida.

 

Glen as he liked to be called as an avid private pilot earning his license after the war on January 3, 1948. He also was a stock car driver in the 1950’s competing in many local races at Bone Stadium in Pittston, PA and other venues. His home-built stock cars carried the number 10.

 

Having an interest in aviation also extended to building aircraft. Glen hand built several including a Pietenpol Air Camper and a Murphy Rebel.

 

He was a member of the Honesdale Masonic Lodge and a past Grand Master.

 

He earned his living first by working in a local saw mill, then as a truck drive hauling new Hudson Jet automobiles, then as an excavator in his own business. He worked long and hard to provide for his family and in the winter would often plow snow for businesses such as Hawley Oil to earn an income.

 

A big fan of Epcot in Disney World he really enjoyed eating at the Biergarten Restaurant in the Germany area and listening to the oompah bands.

 

Glen had one love above all others and that was his wife of 62 years Dorothy Smith. He married her April 24, 1954 and was extremely loyal to her. When she entered the nursing home with Alzheimer’s disease he would visit her daily and spend time with her until the end of her life.

 

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 16th at Green Gates Cemetery, Hawley at 10:30.  Arrangements by Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale.
