Ernest “Duff” D. Cook, 90, of Honesdale, died on Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at his home. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, the former Doris R. Roe. Born on October 3, 1924 at the family home in Lake Ariel, he was the son of the late Amzi and Agnes Schneider Cook. Following his graduation from Lake Ariel High School, he joined the US Army. He served in the Philippines during World War II as a military police officer. He owned and operated Duff Cook’s Barbershop in Honesdale for 49 years and retired in 2000. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Honesdale and a 60 year member of the Salem and Honesdale Masonic Lodges. Duff was also a member of the American Legion, Post 254. An avid gardener, Duff also enjoyed feeding the birds. In addition to his wife he is survived by his son Stephen Cook of Apalachin, NY; his daughter Amy Carroll and husband Richard of Mount Joy, PA; a sister Ethel Rose and husband Ed of Cherry Ridge; a sister-in-law Elaine Cook of Lake Ariel; a brother-in-law Philip Murray of Camp Hill, PA; grandsons Scott Carroll and Alan Carroll and wife Amber; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant son Paul Cook; brothers William, Arthur, Alfred, and Harold Cook; sisters Elizabeth Gorton and Jean Turner. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 25th at Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale at 11am by Reverend Michael Lyle. The family will receive friends on Saturday, 10 to service time. Private interment will be in Salem Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Honesdale, 201 10th St. Honesdale, PA 18431.
