Reverend Edward S. Finn, died on Thursday, August 25, 2016  Father Finn, son of the late William and Julia Shaughnessy Finn, was born in Brooklyn, New York on October 28, 1925.  He received his early education at Good Shepherd School, and graduated from North East High School, North East, PA.  Father graduated from Mount Saint Mary’s Minor Seminary and St. Alphonsus Major Seminary, Esopus, NY. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Redemptorist Community on June 21, 1952, by Francis Joseph Cardinal Spellman at Saint Alphonsus Major Seminary in Esopus, New York

Father Finn was fluent in Portuguese and did Post Graduate work at the University of San Paulo in Brazil; Marquette University, Milwaukee and Saint Louis University, Missouri.

Father Finn served sixteen years working as a missionary in Corumba, Brazil and Paranaque, Brazil with the Redemptorist Fathers.  When he returned the United States he was assigned to a parish in Buffalo, New York; he then served as a Catholic Chaplain with the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Brooklyn, New York.

Father requested incardination into the Diocese of Scranton, which was granted June 7, 1990.  Father continued his ministry with the Veterans Administration Hospital in Brooklyn during the week and served the churches in the Honesdale area on the weekends.

After his retirement from the Veteran Administration Hospital on November 3, 1994 he continued to celebrate Mass at parishes in Honesdale, White Mills, Lake Ariel, and Hawley. Father Finn also served the Diocese by celebrating Mass at several nursing homes including Ellen Memorial in Honesdale and celebrating Mass twice a month at the Wayne County Prison. He also celebrated mass in Portuguese at Nativity Parish in Scranton and was very active ministering to the Portuguese speaking community.

Father Finn received several Veterans Administration Performance Awards for his significant contribution to the mission of the Veterans Hospital by substantially exceeding his performance requirements.

 

He is survived by 16 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brothers Reverend William Finn and John Finn and sisters Bernadette Halloran and Rosaire Gillin.

Viewing will take place at St. John the Evangelist Church, Terrace St., Honesdale, PA on Sunday, August 28, 2016, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  A Vesper Service will be celebrated at 7:00 p.m. at Saint John the Evangelist Church.

A Pontifical Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Most Reverend Joseph C. Bambera, D.D., J.C.L., Bishop of Scranton, on Monday, August 29, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Saint John the Evangelist Church, Terrace St., Honesdale, PA 18431. Interment will be in Saint Joseph’s Cemetery, Rileyville.
