Doris E. Mohn (Hankins)

Doris Eleanor Hankins Mohn,101 years young, passed peacefully at home on Tuesday, August 15, 2023 with her daughters at her side. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond C. Mohn, in 1980.

Doris was  born on October 19, 1921 in Susquehanna, Pa, to parents Carrie Anna Heller Hankins and Samuel Henry Hankins.  She spent much of her younger years with her mom, brothers and grandparents in Atco, near Beach Lake . Her grandfather, George Heller, a well-known surveyor and builder, was a precious part of her childhood.  Doris was a lifelong resident of Wayne County.  The exception was 2 years in New York City, immediately after her marriage, which she said gave her a renewed appreciation of country life.

Doris graduated from Damascus High School, Class of 1940. When she and Ray returned to Atco from “the City”, she began her career of rearing four children, participating in 4H as a troop leader, leading bake sales for the PTA, supporting the Delaware Valley Grange as a member and Fair booth volunteer…and many more projects of a loving Mom.   After her husband Ray passed and her children were adults, she began work at the Wayne County Housing Authority in the courthouse in Honesdale, where she was very proud of helping find homes for those in need.

Doris is survived by daughters, Elaine Downes (Gerard), Hockessin, DE, Nancy Mohn (Bob Keen), Simsbury, CT and  daughter-in-law, Kathy Mohn, Beach Lake, PA.  Also, beloved granddaughters Stephanie Downes and Erin Mohn and cherished nieces and nephews, Susan Tullis and Barbara Simmons and Wayne Hankins and Dennis Hankins.   Her sons, Raymond and Larry, and brothers Albert and George, predeceased her.

Graveside services for the family will be officiated by Pastor Phyllis Haynes.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Narrowsburg, NY.
