Christine Anne Koberlein, 88, of White Mills and formerly of Prompton, died on Sunday, August 24, 2014 at Wayne Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Koberlein on May 18, 1994. She was born in Manhattan, NY on June 29, 1926, daughter of the late Alexander Smith and Anne Cecme Smith Koberlein. She was adopted by her mother’s second husband, George Koberlein and eventually married his nephew Sam in 1946. Trained as a dancer in ballet and tap, she appeared on stage in New York City but put her dancing on hold when she married Sam. During World War II, she worked at the NY Daily News and also volunteered at the USO where service men waited to go overseas for D-Day. In 1946, Christine and her husband Sam moved to Prompton and raised chickens and their children. Years later, they started a septic cleaning service. Chris and Sam were travelers and traveled in all 48 states, parts of Canada and Mexico, camped with the PA Lamplighters, and traveled throughout Europe following the path of the Big Red One (first Army Infantry) Battalion from Normandy to Germany. When Sam passed away in 1994, Christine returned to her love of dancing and became an accomplished ballroom dancer, attending weekly dances at Arthur Murray Dance Studio. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale, participating in its Altar and Rosary Society, and singing for many years in their choir. She traveled to Europe with the choir to sing for Pope John Paul II at the Vatican and also at the Choir Festival in Austria and Rome. She was also a member of the Court St. Martin #418, Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She is survived by her children, Allen Koberlein and wife Nancy of Bethany, PA, Nora Koberlein of White Mills, Roger Koberlein and wife Nancy of Newark, TX, Kathleen Meyer and husband Jack of Shepherdstown, WV and Joanne Hughes and husband Keith of Dillsburg, PA; 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. She will also be missed by her cat Hansel. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, August 28th at 10 am at St. Mary Magdalen Church, Honesdale. Interment will follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Cochecton Center, NY. Friends may visit Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale on Wednesday from 5 to 8.
