Charles J. “Charlie” Parrish, 94, passed away on Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at The Gino J. Merli Veterans Center in Scranton.

Born on July 11, 1922 in Honesdale, he was the son of the late Isaac and Mary Wagner Parrish.

Charlie was a lifelong resident of Honesdale and was a proud veteran of World War II. He served in the U.S. Army Infantry from 1942 until 1945 and saw action in the North African and Italian campaigns. He was trained as an Army Scout and was awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded in battle at Cassino, Italy in 1944.

After recovering from his wounds, he was honorably discharged from the Army and worked with his father’s plumbing business in Honesdale. He later worked for the Pennsylvania Game Commission and S.J. Bailey and Sons Furniture Company where he retired in 1982.

Charlie was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to hunt, fish, and just be outdoors enjoying nature. He was also a talented artist and had a passion for woodcarving and painting. He created an extensive collection of carved songbirds, birds of prey and waterfowl.

As a resident of Bethany Village and Gino Merli Veterans Center in Scranton, Charlie loved to socialize with the staff and fellow residents. He received great satisfaction if he could just cheer up a fellow resident and offer some encouragement.

Charlie is survived by his son Dan, daughter-in-law, Marsha, and grandson Christopher all of Whitehouse Station, NJ, as well as a brother, Ralph of Port Jervis, NY.

He was preceded in death by his brothers Harold and Raymond Parrish.

His family would sincerely like to thank the entire staff of Bethany Village and the caregivers of the Gino Merli Veterans Center for their professional care and loving friendship that they provided to Charlie.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 15th at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Honesdale at 10 am. Interment with military honors will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, Honesdale. Friends may visit Hessling Funeral Home, Inc., 428 Main St. Honesdale on Sunday, 2 to 4.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Wounded Warrior Project or The Disabled American Veterans (DAV).
